Theodore Henson Mast

August 19, 1943 – September 14, 2026

Theodore “Ted” Henson Mast, loved and cherished by many, passed away on the morning of September 14, 2026, in Boone, North Carolina. He was 83 years old at the time of his passing. Ted was born in Cove Creek, North Carolina to Nell Henson Mast and Robert Alden Mast.

For many in the high country, Ted Mast was a fast friend and close confidant. His oldest friend met him while he attended Cove Creek High School. After high school, Ted attended a vocational college to become a barber, putting customers at ease with his warm and friendly personality. He was a regular at the Moose Lodge, dancing the night away and entertaining all with a quick joke and easy smile. Ted longed to see more of this vast country and would later work for Cooks Trucking, traveling to far-off places, perfect for someone with his adventurous spirit. Though he passed through nearly every state, he always remarked that the high country was the prettiest place he’d ever been.

After his son, Alden, was born, he settled back in Boone, opening High Country Hair so he could better take care of family and friends. Ted was always ready to help those in need and would give someone the shirt off his back if they’d needed it. He loved taking his houseboat out on Watauga Lake where he and Alden often spent the long summer days visiting with friends and where he taught his son to live with integrity and take joy from the little things. And on the weekends, Ted loved nothing more than having friends over to watch the Nascar race.

Ted’s life was a testament to the power of friendship, the joy of stopping to smell the apple pie, and the strength that comes from cherishing one’s family.

Ted’s memory will be treasured by his son Alden and daughter-in-law Catherine; his sister-in-law Judy; his nieces Tammie and Jan; his nephew Bobby Jr., as well as a host of beloved cousins, and extended family.

Ted is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Nell, brothers Bobby and Gordon, as well as his sister, Carolyn.

At this time, the family is planning a private service to celebrate Ted’s life and honor his memory.
