Shirley Matheson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, June 28th, 2026, at the age of 92. Shirley was born on March 23, 1934, in Vilas, North Carolina, to Luther and Eunice South.
Shirley lived a life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her community. She was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she found strength, fellowship, and purpose throughout her life.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Lester Matheson
She is survived by her only son, James Edgar Matheson (72); granddaughter, Kristi Matheson McQueen (44), her husband, James McQueen (42); and their son, Jeremiah McQueen (8); grandson, James Richard Matheson (41), his wife, Tara Matheson (43), along with their daughters, Brooklynn (7) and Savanna (5); grandson, Kyle Matheson (33); and granddaughter, Kayleigh Matheson (26).
Shirley will be remembered for her loving heart, gentle spirit, and the deep love she shared with her family. Whether worshipping at Bethel Baptist Church, spending time with her family, quilting, or tending the blueberry bushes she cared for well into her later years, she approached life with a quiet determination and grace that is rarely found.
A memorial and funeral service celebrating Shirley's life will be held on Thursday, July 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Mount lawn Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor her memory. An informal viewing and meet and greet with the family will be held immediately preceding the service.
Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in the wonderful memories they shared with her and in the faith that guided her throughout her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Bethel Baptist Church or a charity of your choice in Shirley's memory.
