Obituary

Scott Francis Powell of Lewisville, NC went home to his Lord and Savior on June 19, 2022, at the age of 46.

The son of Judith Vough Powell and the late Raymond Francis Powell, Scott was born in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri on August 30, 1975. He was a husband, an engineer, and most importantly, a follower of Jesus.

Scott earned his BS from Duke University in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics in 1997 and his MS in Environmental Engineering from Duke in 2012. He served his country in the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army from 1997-2001 and in the Colorado National Guard from 2001-2005. Following his military service, Scott served as a Project Team Leader and Disaster Response Coordinator for Engineering Ministries International from 2005-2010.

After getting his Master's from Duke University in 2012, Scott worked as an engineer for CH2MHill and served with Samaritan's Purse on several DARTs (Disaster Assistance Response Team) from 2013-2018. He then joined Samaritan's Purse full-time in 2018, where he served as their Technical Advisor Manager.

Scott found his greatest joy and fulfillment in using his practical skills to demonstrate the love of Christ to people all over the world in very tangible ways: rescuing them from their darkest hours following a natural or manmade disaster, getting them drinkable water, equipping them with sustainable practices in Jesus' name in order to improve their lives long term and provide ample opportunities for them to hear the Good News, and training others to do the work that he did.

Although Scott was brilliant, hardworking, and achieved many impressive accomplishments and awards throughout his life, he was uncomfortable talking about his achievements. He preferred to serve quietly and diligently, giving the credit for whatever he was able to accomplish to his Lord and Savior, the giver of every good and perfect gift.

He is survived by his wife Laura Zifer Powell, his mother Judith Vough Powell, his brother Jason Francis Powell and wife Molly and their two sons, and his sister Melissa Hallnor and husband Eric and their son.

A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, July 19th, 2022, at 3:00pm at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Boone, North Carolina.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Samaritan's Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org) or Women in Apologetics (www.womeninapologetics.com).
