Dr. Roy Alton Hyle, II, 82, formerly of Carrollton, Virginia, passed away December 20, 2023 at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living in Boone, NC, due to complications of Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Born July 28, 1941 in Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Roy Alton Hyle, Sr., and Olivia Mitchell Hyle.

He graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News in 1959, where he played on their state championship-winning golf team. After high school, he worked for a year (and subsequent summers) at the Newport News Shipbuilding, where his small stature allowed him to work inside small places not accessible to other laborers. He then attended East Carolina University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and a master's degree in 1966, both in Biology. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. He enjoyed a long career teaching science, first at College of the Albemarle (where he met his late wife, Sandra) and Christopher Newport Community College (now Christopher Newport University), eventually teaching introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, and marine ecology for nearly 40 years at Thomas Nelson Community College (now Virginia Peninsula Community College), where he also served as the faculty advisor to the Science Club. In addition to his teaching vocation, Roy was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener, all of which he passed on to his two sons, Eddie and Reid. He was a talented golfer and skilled woodworker and painter and created many detailed carvings, decoys, and walking sticks. Roy and Sandra were animal lovers and owned and loved more pets than they could count over their lifetime together.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Davenport Hyle. Roy is survived by his sons, Edward Alton Hyle and wife Kristin of Zionville, NC, and Aaron Reid Hyle and wife Dr. Chelsea Jurczenko of Rockledge, FL; sisters, Barbara Vansant and husband Michael Hill of Newport News, VA, and Judith Hudgins and husband Edward of Deltona, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living for the compassionate care provided to "Mr. Roy" over the past two years and to the staff of Medi-Home Health and Hospice, who assisted in his care in his last few months. In keeping with Roy's commitment to education, he chose to donate his brain to the Mayo Clinic Brain Bank to further research into the causes of Parkinson's disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and other neurological and movement disorders.

Per Roy's wishes, there will be no service.
