Obituary

Roger K. Clark, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 in Boone, NC after a brief bout with COVID that triggered multiple complications. He was known as "RKie" to his friends in Boone. Roger was born December 6, 1946 in Pittsburg, PA. He grew up in Pennsylvania, graduated from The Hun School of Princeton, and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Hartford. He married Edna Manning in 1968 and moved to Richmond, Virginia to work in banking. He received an MBA from the University of Richmond and was self-employed as a CPA until retirement. During his time in Richmond, Roger was very active with Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, served as a member of the Richmond City School Board, and volunteered with many organizations.

Roger moved to Boone, NC in 2014 and continued his life of service to others by volunteering regularly with many local groups including the Southern Appalachian Historical Association (SAHA, Board Member), the Hunger and Health Coalition's Wood Lot service, the Project on Aging's Home Delivered Meals program, Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture's Boone Winter Farmers' Market, the Watauga County Farmers' Market (summer), the Blue Ridge Conservancy, the New River Conservancy, the Listening Post at AppState, and pretty much any event that needed volunteers such as the Watauga County Parks and Recreation Easter Egg Hunt right before he became sick and the BS&G bicycle event that he was scheduled to drive sweep for in June.

Roger also enjoyed camping and river trips (he was planning another Grand Canyon rafting trip this summer), tinkering on his Austin Healey cars, reading books about history, riding trains (especially with steam locomotives), attending old-time acoustic music events like the Jones House Weekly Jam Sessions (even though he didn't play an instrument) and wearing his kilt and sword to attend various Scottish Highland Games and events around the area (Clan Skene).

Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Edna M. Clark, parents Edward and Mary K. Clark, his brother Ched, and his sister Cynthia. He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Clark Marland and her husband Eric Marland of Boone, NC, his son Kenneth Clark and his wife Annette Clark of Salt Lake City, UT, grandchildren Simon Marland, Levi Marland, Riley Clark, Ronan Clark, and Wilson Clark. Other survivors include his brother Richard Clark of The Plains, VA and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will not be held at this time. The family suggests that memorial donations can be made in his honor to any of the charitable organizations that Roger/RKie loved to support.
