Obituary

Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Hyler McConnell walked from this life into the eternal presence of God on Sept. 4, 2026 at Harmony at Greensboro in Greensboro, NC.

Mary Lib was born in Caswell County, NC on Oct. 15, 1933 to Claude Wesley Hyler, Sr. and Ida Belle Howard Hyler. She met the love of her life, Bobby Franklin McConnell, at Appalachian State University where she obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Math and Science Education. The couple married Aug. 19, 1956 and spent three years in Asheville, NC and two years in Greenville, SC before settling in Bobby’s hometown of Boone, NC.

Mary Lib spent over thirty years teaching mathematics, primarily at Watauga High School, where she taught for twenty-two years, retiring in 1987. She often joked that after retiring, she went to work for her husband as his right arm woman on his many projects and his car business.

Mary Lib is survived by her brother, Earl Hyler and wife, Joanne, of Yanceyville, NC and their two grandchildren, Clint Hyler and Grant Hyler of Yanceyville, NC; niece, Marie Hyler of Kernersville, NC; niece, Lisa McConnell of Greensboro, NC; nephew, Bain McConnell and wife, Carol, of Leland, NC; great nephews Brian McConnell and wife, Emily, and their daughter, Addison, of Garner, NC and Tommy McConnell and wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Charlotte, of Leland, NC. She was preceded in death by her brother, Claude Hyler, Jr., and her nephew, William Hyler.

A private family entombment will be at Mount Lawn Memorial Park on Wed. Sept. 9th. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Watauga Humane Society, PO Box 1835, Boone NC 28607.
