Obituary

Laura Mitchell Hickey, 76, Boone, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2023. In lieu of visitation or a funeral service there will be a gathering of family and friends on April 30, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Boone in the Fellowship Hall.

In 1992 Laura came to Banner Elk, NC to work with children in a residential home. She started out as a child youth worker and then progressed to the Director of Residential Treatment until her retirement in 2009. Prior to that she had worked in Florida with the Seminole Indians. After her retirement, Laura once again found herself in a position to serve others, this time in the world of retail. Laura went to work at South's Clothiers in the Mall in 2011 where she remained a valuable employee until her passing. Laura loved helping people choose the perfect dress or outfit for any occasion, she was always thrilled when she accompanied the owner on buying trips to other cities.

Laura was born in St. Louis, MO, she also lived in Toccoa, Georgia for part of her early education. She attended college until her senior year in Bennet College, New York until she had the opportunity to live in Australia with her parents for a couple of years. She returned to the US where she eventually graduated with a Master of Science from Liberty University. Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Moreh Mitchell, and Anne McGonigal Hickey.

Laura is survived by her brother, Rick Mitchell, and sister-in-law Maureen (Mo) Mitchell, her dog Takoda, her cat Sally, and Ginger Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saddle Up for St. Jude Trail Ride, 121 East 6th Street, Tuscumbia, Al 35674. The family would like to thank her primary care doctor, Dr. Christopher McCracken, the wonderful staff at Watauga Medical Center who took exceptional care of her over the past couple of years.

Laura loved Jesus.

A gathering of family and friends will be held April 30, 2023, at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Boone.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Saddle up for St. Jude Alabama, 121 East 6th Street, Tuscumbia, Alabama 35674.
