The Honorable John E. Steele, Senior United States District Judge (1949–2026)

Known both on and off the bench for his ready smile and infinite patience, the Honorable John E. Steele, Senior United States District Judge for the Middle District of Florida, passed away on July 14, 2026, at the age of 77. Judge Steele, or “Jay” as he was called by friends and strangers alike, was born in Michigan and attended the University of Detroit College of Law before beginning his career in public service at the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. From there, Judge Steele joined the United States Attorney’s Office in Grand Rapids before transferring to the Jacksonville Office in the Middle District of Florida. In 1988, Judge Steele joined the firm of Mahoney Adams & Criser, where he later served as Chairman of the Litigation Department.

Judge Steele joined the federal bench in 1991 as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Jacksonville Division of the Middle District of Florida. On July 28, 2000, Judge Steele was sworn in as the first United States District Judge for the Fort Myers Division, which quickly became his new and beloved home. In addition to his judicial duties, Judge Steele was an adjunct professor at Florida Coastal School of Law and Ave Maria School of Law. Judge Steele also served as a generous teacher, mentor, and friend to new judges and his law clerks. He took senior status in 2016 and retained a heavy docket until his passing.

When not at the courthouse, Judge Steele could often be found at lunch on First Street in Downtown Fort Myers. Despite usually being armed with work, he always greeted lawyers and friends with a smile and an invitation to join him. He started a Friday chambers lunch tradition in Jacksonville and continued it in Fort Myers. Judge Steele served the Middle District with integrity, humility, and kindness. A wonderful colleague who was admired by all, Judge Steele’s years of dedicated public service will leave a lasting legacy in the Middle District of Florida.

Judge Steele is survived by his beloved wife Lynda, four sisters, and his furry feline friends, Smokey and Bandit. He will be greatly missed and celebrated every day.
