Mr. John Henry Johnson, age 89 of Boone, NC formerly of the Meat Camp Community, Todd, NC passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the home of his daughter on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

He was born on January 9, 1937, to the late Rev. Noah Jim and Ola Miller Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Reece Johnson with whom he shared 48 years of a faithful Godly marriage before her homegoing on February 6, 2005. One son Jerry "Wayne" Johnson, one brother Ray Johnson (Barbara) and two sisters, Virgina Ward (Albert) and Opal Baird (Howard). As well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law Oscar and Maude Reece. He was further preceded in death by two sister's-in-law Louise May (Arvil Lee) and Emogene Miller (Bob) five brother's-in-law Freddie Reece, Kenny Wilson, Claude Warren, Albert Oliver, and Bobby Reece.

John spent most of his younger years working in the mountains logging with his dad and helping at his dad's sawmill. He enjoyed traveling with his dad to revivals and church services and always joked about going home with a family from the church for a Sunday meal and spending time with the family's daughters. He later worked at Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir and then retired from Appalachian State University in 1997. In his spare time, he enjoyed cutting wood, planting and harvesting a big garden. He found great joy in helping the elderly with wood for the winter and sharing his crop with friends, family and neighbors. He enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandson Darius and his family. He loved those grandbabies.

John accepted Christ as his personal Savior in 1949 under the preaching of Victor Trivette at a revival service at Proffit's Grove Baptist Church. He was later baptized in the creek at Proffit's Grove by his dad, Rev. Noah Johnson. John served the congregation of Proffit's Grove Baptist Church faithfully. He was ordained as a deacon in 1968 and served faithful as Chairman of Deacons for many years as well as many other church offices. He was a very dependable worker of the gospel, and he kept the faith and kept going even when things got hard. He was faithful in attendance until his health prevented him from attending. Daily he would ask himself the question "Is the way I am living my life and serving in leadership to the church pleasing to God?" He was often asked why he did not become a preacher, and his answer was always "I was never called by the Lord" He lived a life of service and simplicity, and he did it well.

Of all his accomplishments, he found the most joy in being a husband, dad, grandpa and paw. He instilled God's word and faith into his family. He talked with his grandson, Darius, every day around 4:00 p.m. and he made sure the line was clear for that call. Darius was his pride and joy. He later became great grandpa to Adeline and Henry. They were following the same path as their daddy. He adored them. He adored Darius's wife Mara and loved her as if she was his own granddaughter. He served his family faithfully.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Treva Johnson Jones and husband Douglas of Boone NC. One grandson, Darius Jones and wife Mara of Fleetwood NC one great-granddaughter Adeline Jones of Fleetwood NC and one great-grandson Henry Jones of Fleetwood NC.

John is also survived by his two brothers Bernard Johnson and wife Cara of Boone NC and Leroy Johnson and wife Beverly of Todd NC. He is further survived by sister's-in-law Faye Warren and Becky Wilson of Mtn City TN, Virginia Oliver of Zionville NC and his brother-in-law Lynn Reece and wife Pat of Zionville NC. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom had a special place in his heart and he loved deeply.

There is no greater gift from God other than him giving his only Son for our salvation than being born into a generation of believers. Believers who fought the good fight, raised their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on truth, grace and love of God. Now he has finished his race. 2 Timothy 4:7 He has heard the Lord say "Well done good and faithful servant" Matthew 25:23. He leaves behind a legacy centered on faith, servant leadership, unconditional love, unwavering devotion, steadfast service and gentle kindness. A couple of his favorite sayings were "You will never go wrong by doing right" "Death is not permanent: it is merely a sleep!"

Although he will be greatly missed by his family and all that have had the chance to know him, we are thankful for the promise that we know where he is. Heaven truly just got sweeter.

Services for John will be held on Sunday, June 7th at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Hampton's Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Proffit's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. The Rev. Derrick Wilson and the Rev. Kenny Newberry will be officiating.
