James Douglas "Doug" Cornell, age 54, of Deep Gap, passed away Monday, May 22, 2023, at his home following a long battle with cancer.

He was born November 28, 1968, in Watauga County. A son of James Robert Cornell and Brenda Watson Cornell.

In addition to his father and mother he is survived by, two sons, Josh Nations and wife Meghan of Boone and Shane Brady of New Mexico, two sisters, Dawn Chiarolanzio and husband Skip of Deep Gap, Angela McLean and husband Travis of Banner Elk, one grandchild, Scarlet Nations of Boone, four nephews, Robert Chiarolanzio and wife Char of West Jefferson, Adam Chiarolanzio and wife  Lexy of Concord, Holden McLean and Austin McLean both of Banner Elk, two nieces, Brooke Chiarolanzio and Amber Chiarolanzio both of Greensboro, and two great-nephews, Kaiden Chiarolanzio and Jaxon Chiarolanzio both of West Jefferson.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Otis & Stella Watson, his paternal grandparents, Ernest Cornell & Maude McCaslin.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Harvey Presnell will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00, prior to the service.

A private graveside service will be held at Cornell Family Cemetery.

The family respectfully request no food.
