Obituary

Henry "HN" Nathan Gwyn Jr. of Newland, NC passed away on October 5, 2026, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. He was born on March 4, 1944, in Greensboro, NC. Known to many as HN, he will be remembered as a man of deep faith, generous spirit, and enduring love for his family.

HN built a long and steady career marked by dedication and hard work. He worked for Sears and Roebuck Co. for 33 years, from 1960 to 1993. He also worked for Sonoco-Crellin and Watauga Opportunities. In every season of life, he enjoyed serving others and took pride in being dependable and useful wherever he was needed.

He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard from 1964 to 1970. That same sense of commitment and courage could also be seen in the many interests he pursued throughout his life. HN enjoyed coin collecting, gun collecting, and he found great pleasure in playing cards and performing card tricks. He also embraced adventure through skydiving and caving, and he loved fishing. Traveling locally and abroad with his family brought him special joy and created lasting memories for those who shared those experiences with him.

At the heart of HN’s life was his deep faith in Jesus Christ. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That faith shaped the way he lived and the way he cared for others. He will be remembered for his kindness, his willingness to serve, and the steady example he offered to those around him.

HN is survived by his loving wife, Marie Gwyn. He also leaves behind his children, Henry Nathan Gwyn III (Trey), (Angela), Amy Hawks-Atkins, (Craig), Jana Goad, Mitchell Bledsoe, (Leanne), and Lauren Kracht, (Aaron). His family continued to grow through the generations, and he was blessed with grandchildren, Holly, (Courtney), Haley, Tatum, (Thomas), Alden, Nathan, Laurel, Bennett, Brecken, Corbin, Tracer, Adaline and Bode, and a great-grandchild Bonnie. He is also survived by his sisters, Jan Randleman and Janine Sells. The love he shared with his family will remain a lasting part of his legacy, and his memory will continue to be treasured by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Frances Gwyn and by his brothers, Chuck Gwyn and Jimmy Gwyn.

The family will receive friends during a visitation on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, Boone, NC. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
