Obituary

Geneva Shores Shelton, age 93, passed from her earthly life to her heavenly home on October 26, 2024, surrounded by her children. Geneva's favorite song was "Go Rest High on That Mountain", and we believe she is now resting with her Savior and her loved ones who have gone before her.

Geneva was born on June 7th,1931 to Richard Asbury Shores and Myrtle Ivalee Shores. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernon Shelton, having celebrated 60 years, one month and 12 days of marriage. She was also preceded in death by one brother Jim Shelton, four sisters: Mary Snyder, Amanda Brown, Reba Potter and Zelma Potter.

Geneva was a faithful member of Mabel Baptist Church, a Godly woman, a prayer warrior and a friend to all. Geneva had a servant's heart and possessed the spiritual gift of hospitality. She was an incredible cook… sourdough bread and homemade candies were among her specialties! Geneva was well known for blessing people with home cooked meals, loaves of her sourdough bread with homemade strawberry jam and beautiful displays of assorted Christmas candies that she shared with her family, friends and her network of community service providers.

Geneva was a devoted Mother to her four children: Evelyn Shelton (Ronald), Kathy Burkett (Frank), Carolyn Greene (Rick), and Ken Shelton. When asked what was most important to her, Geneva always replied, "my family". We are blessed that she was our mother, and we are honored to have cared for her.

Geneva became Grandma Geneva ("GiGi") with the birth of her grandchildren whom she adored. She is survived by her six grandchildren: Kelly Burkett, Garrett Burkett (Ashley), Kindsay Reeder (Jonathan), Morgann McSwain (Michael), Christie Jones (Eddie) and Scott Garlock (Angela). She is also survived by her nine great grandchildren: Chase Otto (Halie), Beckett Reeder (who shares the same birthday with his GiGi), Graham McSwain, McKinley Burkett, Collyns Clay Reeder, Caroline Martha McSwain, Aiden Watson, Colson Jones, and Adalyn Garlock. Gigi was also blessed with one great-great-granddaughter, Lilith Gray Otto. GiGi is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Friends and family soon referred to her as GiGi, and she opened her big heart to all the children in her church as well as to her children and grandchildren's friends. During the past 11 months, GiGi was a resident at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation. During her stay, she captured the hearts of many of the staff who cared for her as if she was their grandmother. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for these very special care givers who showed GiGi every day how much they loved her.

Geneva's children would also like to recognize and thank their sister of the heart…Tina Rayfield. Tina provided wonderful loving care to Geneva and to them. Geneva couldn't remember names and lovingly referred to Tina as "That Girl".

Geneva's Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, October 30th at Hampton's Funeral Service. The family will receive friends at 11:00 with the service to follow at 12:00 pm. A private graveside service will be held at the Burkett-Lewis Cemetery. The family respectfully requests no food. Our family would like to leave you with a final thought from our dear Mother whose favorite parting saying to family and friends was, "You better be good…cause word gets around."
