Della Louise Bumgarner Miller completed her earthly assignment and received her heavenly reward on October 21, 2023, at the age of 93. Della was a lifelong resident of Boone until she had to have constant Dementia care, and has lived with her daughter's family in Lincolnton, NC since 2014.

Della was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Miller, her parents Spencer, and Ruth (Parlier) Bumgarner, and her brothers Gene and Gordon Bumgarner.

She leaves behind her two children, son Donny Miller (Sandy), and daughter Carol Miller Whitfield (Hugh); five grandchildren - Jennifer Miller Gargrave (Bo), Jonathan Miller, Stacey Miller Green (Andrew), Lara Whitfield Jones (Tyler), and Natalie Whitfield Johnson (Sam). Nine great-grandchildren will carry on her memory.

Della graduated from Appalachian High School in the class of 1948. She married J.D. in 1952, and they raised their children as members of Boone United Methodist Church. Della enjoyed working each year with the BUMC Bazaar and attending Circle 6 meetings with her friends. Della worked after her children entered school, primarily at Belk in the Men's Department. Widowed in 1980, she worked with her son for twenty-four years as a receptionist in his CPA office until at the age of 84, she moved to live with her daughter's family.

In her youth, Della was baptized by profession of faith at Middle Fork Baptist Church, and rarely missed going to church her entire life. Since moving she has worshiped regularly for 3 years at Tri-City Baptist Church in Conover, and 6 years at Pearl Baptist Church in Iron Station, NC. Heartfelt thanks to Nina Rome, Gale Deal, Robin Powers, and Lisa Kilgore who have assisted with her care over the most recent years. Thank you to others who have helped along this journey together.

Services for Della will be Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 2:00 o'clock at Hampton's Funeral Chapel in Boone. The family will speak with friends from 12:30 to 2:00, prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Mount Lawn Cemetery. Officiating will be Dr. Hugh Whitfield, and Dr. George E. Naff.
