Carol Barr Deal, 78, of Boone, North Carolina, entered into rest at The Foley Center at Chestnut Ridge, Blowing Rock, North Carolina, on January 22, 2024. Carol was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Theo S. Weaver Barr and James Raymond Barr.
Carol received four degrees from Appalachian State University. She retired from the Watauga County Schools as the associate superintendent. After retirement, she continued to teach as an Adjunct Instructor for ASU's Reich College of Education's reading education program.
In 1992, she was honored with the Long Leaf Pine Award by the governor of North Carolina for her leadership in education, and in 1996, she received the Governor's Excellence in Education Award for her work on the First Steps Program, an early intervention reading program. In 2020, Carol was inducted into the Reich College of Education Rhododendron Society, the College's highest honor given to alumni for their exemplary service to education and to their communicates.
Carol was a member of and volunteer at Boone United Methodist Church.
Carol was a lifelong advocate for education, and was proud to be part of the Boone community. She was loved by family and friends, and will be missed.
Carol is survived by her sister, Joanna B. Trimble; 3 nieces, 2 nephews, a grandniece and grandnephew, and a sister-in-law. Brother Franklin W. Barr preceded her in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held February 15, 2024, 2:00 pm in the chapel of Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Blvd, Boone, North Carolina. The family will hold a private burial service at Little Britain Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania.
