Laura

Laura "Lauri" Bischofs Himmelman, age 57, of 496 McGuire Road, Elk Park, died Thursday morning, November 8, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Lauri was born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas into a military family. Her father’s different tour of duties landed them in Germany. She spent many of her early years there, eventually graduating from Frankfurt American High School. After returning to the United States, she met her husband Rob in Alexandria, Virginia in 1975. In 1976, Lauri and Rob moved to the Old Beech Mountain community where she resided until her death.

Lauri’s main passion in life was horticulture and she established Old Beech Flower Farm and Landscaping Company in 1984 with her husband Rob. She loved being outdoors and always claimed “she found God in her gardens”. Lauri was an extraordinary mother who showed so much love for her two daughters, always speaking of them with so much pride and joy, supporting everything they did, and filling their lives with amazing memories. She always enjoyed being surrounded by good friends and laughter, eating and cooking delicious food, and listening to beautiful music. She truly believed that mans’ best friends were dogs. Lauri’s personality was always enough to brighten up any room she walked into. She was constantly making jokes no matter the circumstance. Her infectious laughter and smile were contagious. She had a heart of gold. Her strength, courage, positive energy, and sense of humor inspired everyone who knew her. Her life was ended much too quickly and she will forever be deeply missed. But she will continue to live in the hearts of everyone she touched.

Mrs. Himmelman is survived by her husband, Rob Himmelman of the home; two daughters, Rose Anne Himmelman and Leah Marie Himmelman, both of Boone; her mother, Henriette Bischofs of St. Petersburg, Florida; three sisters, Susie Nolen of Waco, Texas, Gina Whitson and husband Dave of Denver, Colorado, and Nancy Bischofs of Eugene, Oregon, and one brother, Paul Bischofs of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her father, Hans Bischofs.

A memorial service for Laura "Lauri" Bischofs Himmelman will be conducted Saturday morning, December 1, 2012, at 11:00 o'clock, at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Avery County Humane Society, 279 Vale Road, Newland, North Carolina, 28657, or to the American Cancer Society, in care of Brian Barker, 441 Daniel Drive, Boone, North Carolina, 28607.
